MSU Center for Simulation
About Us

Our Core Mission & Vision

The MSU Simulation Program operates with a foundational commitment to excellence, guided by a clear path forward:

  • Mission: To provide dynamic, high-quality health care simulation-based education, driven by industry feedback, that cultivates leaders, enhances well-being, and tackles practical concerns through experiential learning, research, and innovation while serving the community and beyond.
  • Vision: Employing innovative health care simulation education, assessment, and research to foster a thriving society.

Bridging Theory to Practice: Why Simulation Matters

Modern healthcare demands professionals who possess advanced critical thinking, team communication, and clinical judgment. However, traditional clinical rotations alone cannot guarantee exposure to high-risk, low-frequency events or provide the controlled, safe environment necessary for zero-risk mastery. The MSU Simulation Program effectively addresses this gap by serving as the centralized unit for simulation-based education across MSU.

  • Accreditation and Consistency: Our SSH-accredited program ensures consistency in scenario design, delivery, and debriefing across all MSU’s health and human service disciplines.
  • Interprofessional Education (IPE): This comprehensive IPE approach directly prepares students for the collaborative practice required in complex, real-world settings.

Program History & State-of-the-Art Facilities

Our center was made possible by significant institutional commitment and philanthropic support, ensuring we have the infrastructure to meet demand.

  • Funding & History: The establishment of the center was the result of a generous donation from The Riley Foundation. In 2023, a $5 million award was given for the renovation and equipping of the Rosenbaum and Deen buildings for simulation learning.
  • Facilities Overview: Our center includes a 7,715 square foot interdisciplinary lab, six Clinical Exam Rooms, six Medical Surgical Rooms, three control rooms, one proctor station, two nurses stations, four pre/debriefing rooms, and a conference room.

Location: Mississippi State University - Meridian Riley Center Campus 2200 5th Street Meridian, MS 39301

Driving Competency Through Data

We move beyond subjective evaluation by employing a rigorous, data-driven assessment system:

  • Our rigorous assessment system is driving measurable improvements in clinical competence, delivering detailed, timestamped feedback to students (e.g., 2,780 annotated comments in 2025).
  • The use of Standardized OSCEs has led to a more accurate and calibrated picture of student performance, ensuring fairness and standardization.

Through strategic cross-campus collaborations, we are actively looking to advancing the next phase of simulation research and innovation. This initiative is explicitly designed to secure a long-term competitive advantage by leveraging diverse institutional expertise to adapt and apply simulation methodology across MSU, significantly advancing performance in non-traditional healthcare disciplines and beyond.

  • Focusing on the design and development of customized simulation components using advanced prototyping methods.
  • Engaging in collaborative research focused on human factors, system performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Actively exploring and implementing emerging educational technologies that enhance advanced sensory fidelity and immersive learning.
  • Utilizing simulation methodology to drive societal impact through external partnerships.
